The festive finale of Klangspuren’s 25-year anniversary takes place in the Silbersaal in Schwaz with Feeding Frenzy – a happening by the New York composer and musician Fast Forward. It was conceived in the spirit of John Cage and has already realized in many venues throughout the world. Six cooks engage in a culinary competition with six musicians to produce a concert in which not only the instruments but also – and especially – the sounds of cooking are used as musical material. During the 90-minute culinary music performance (or musical cooking performance) both groups act simultaneously and use their corresponding “tools of the trade” – whether they be musical instruments, electric burners, pots, pans, plates and dishes. All the noises and sounds are amplified and become part of the musical experience. The task of the musicians involves a score that is structured with temporal precision and they are to playfully improvise and implement their parts in their own personal styles, whereas the food preparation part follows a fixed vegetarian menu plan that each cook personally drew up in advance with Fast Forward. Each one consists of ten courses: hors d’œuvres, appetizers, main courses, and desserts. Each cook produces ten times ten portions which are served with wine and water. As soon as the dishes are ready, the “waiters” serve them to the guests. These dynamics connect the performers to the audience in a special way. Live video recordings provide closer glimpses of the bustling “behind-the-scenes” action that is not always in plain view. With only two exceptions all the musicians and cooks come from Tyrol and in this way reflect the locally rooted arts. Feeding Frenzy is produced in collaboration with the TRANSART festival in South Tyrol, where a parallel Feeding Frenzy will also take place on 09/20.
