John Butcher, tenor + soprano saxophone

The biggest challenge for musicians is playing solo without sheet music. How do you begin? How do you go on without impulses from other players? The thoughts of most soloists are fraught with such questions. And yet: A solo in total concentration that goes well is one of the most exhilarating moments in improvisation music ¬– for the musician and the listeners alike. One man who has never shied away from stepping out in front of an audience alone is the British saxophonist John Butcher. The way he is able to apply the most diverse blowing and playing techniques to formulate long, abstract narrative arcs and let his instruments sometimes whisper, sometimes scream, is always a memorable experience.
