Since its founding in 2004, the KLANGSPUREN INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY (IEMA) has developed into one of the most important and successful projects of the Tyrolean Festival of New Music. In 2015 the KLANGSPUREN IEMA takes place for the twelfth time. The high level of the Academy is guaranteed by renowned personalities who have put their stamp on the individual editions as Composer in Residence: György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, Steve Reich, Benedict Mason, Michael Gielen, Wolfgang Rihm, Martin Matalon, Johannes Maria Staud, Heinz Holliger, George Benjamin, Unsuk Chin, Hans Zender, Wolfgang Mitterer and Hans Abrahamsen. In 2015 Beat Furrer is the Composer in Residence and conductor – one of the most respected composers and conductors of his generation. He ensures an authentic approach to the performance practice and rehearsing of contemporary music. Many of the works the Academy performs in 2015 were chosen with this year’s focus on “alternative tonal systems, micro-intervals and extended playing techniques” in mind. Together with docents from the Ensemble Modern, several works are rehearsed and performed at two concerts (September 12 & 13) and also as part of the extraordinary concert format RENT A MUSICIAN in private spaces (September 6). ACADEMY IN CONCERT I, conducted by Kasper de Roo, features Ma’mounia by Heinz Holliger as well as Aria by Beat Furrer. The solo part is sung by the fabulous Petra Hoffmann, who also performed the work’s world premiere. Spectralism is represented by Gérard Grisey’s Partiels; Luigi Nono’s Incontri is a classic of the avant-garde.
