About

Klangspuren Schwaz, Tyrolean Festival of New Music, was founded in 1993 and has since grown into the largest and most successful festival of contemporary music in western Austria. Since 2019, programming has been in the hands of the music curator and journalist Reinhard Kager, the current artistic director following predecessors Matthias Osterwold, Peter Paul Kainrath, and the festival founder Thomas Larcher. Klangspuren has been held annually in September since its inception and each edition takes its character to a great extent from its Composer in Residence as the connecting link between the festival and the International Ensemble Modern Academy. Since 2019, this role has been joined by the Improviser in Residence, who heads the new two-day format IMPROV#1–#6. Moreover, by alternately integrating the music education projects Klangspuren Mobil, Klangspuren Lautstark, and Klangspuren Barfuss into the festival program, by commissioning compositions, and developing new projects, Klangspuren Schwaz also sees itself as a promoter of the contemporary music scene on both a local and international level.
