Eve Egoyan piano

The Toronto-based Canadian pianist with Armenian roots Eve Egoyan is a very dedicated supporter of Canadian composers. But her repertoire also includes music by Erik Satie, Alvin Curran, Jo Kondo, and many more. Egoyan is extremely interested in the interaction of sound and image. In David Lynch Etudes Nicole Lizée obsessively skips, remixes, and edits fragments from the cult director’s films. The pianist spontaneously reacts to and comments on the glitch aesthetics of the distorted images. The Berlin-based Canadian composer Chiyoko Szlavnics pairs long held sinusoidal tones with the piano and examines the dialectic between the fixed pitches of the piano and the variable shifts in pitch of the sinusoidal waves. Her compositions are based on delicate, precise drawings in which she maps her musical ideas. With Simple Lines of Enquiry and Machine for Taking Time by David Rokeby two independent works of art converge: music and video are not explicitly synchronized, but they enliven each other as they calmly flow along. Ann Southam’s music seems tonal and one hardly notices it is based on a twelve-tone row.
