Frank Ollu conductor

For the closing concert of the 14th installment of the KLANGSPUREN INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY 33 scholarship recipients from roughly 20 countries will play two concerts consisting of highly demanding pieces rehearsed for only ten days for the duration of the Academy master classes. It is always amazing to witness the extreme professionalism of these conducted and non-conducted concerts performed by young musicians playing together for the first time. The idea behind inviting Sofia Gubaidulina to be composer in residence was not only to play her music but also to put it in the hands of qualified young people. Two of her pieces will be interpreted at each of the two Academy concerts. At the first concert we will hear String Quartet No. 2, 1987, and Five Etudes for harp, double bass, and percussion, 1965, two important and characteristic works. The program also includes works by Harrison Birtwistle, Pierre Boulez, and Nicolaus A. Huber three more “old masters” of modernism and postmodernism who each represent original directions in contemporary music.
